Chapter Ten

Rowan woke stiff and sore from his repeated use of her throughout the night. Each time had been more rapturous than the last. Her body had quickly learned to accept and thrill to his possession. She had found it impossible to deny her need for him when he reached for her, pulling her to him and mounting her as he growled softly in her ear.

She did not open her eyes, but heard his heavy and rhythmic breathing. She watched him through her lower lashes. He appeared happy and sated. While she would admit to the latter, she was far from the former. She had been marked, claimed, and relegated to a half-life as mistress to a pack she had once ruled. The bitter taste of betrayal by all those she had led permeated her mouth... all those except Arielle and Sloan.

Rowan extricated herself from Alaric’s sleeping embrace. As she slipped from the bed, she missed his warmth and proximity. It was still dark, but not for much longer. She needed to get to her sister and Sloan and offer them the chance to run with her. She would explain the risks and the consequences should they prove unsuccessful. That Sloan was human was problematic in that they would not be able to shift and get away as wolves.

Gathering her things, she opened the hidden door to the bolt hole and passageway that would be her only chance at freedom. Rowan knew these passages better than anyone and was glad now that she had never revealed their existence or location to anyone other than Sloan and Arielle. She had no doubt that had she done so, once Alaric discovered her missing, he would have sent search parties after them. Even that would not have guaranteed his success; Calon Onest’s escape tunnels had hidden tunnels and rooms contained within the labyrinth itself.

Rowan opened the spyhole into Sloan’s room. As she had suspected, Sloan was awake and dressed but alone. She slid the panel back.

“Thank God, Rowan. Are you all right? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”

Rowan nodded, not trusting her voice to answer her questions. Taking a deep breath, she replied, “I see you were waiting for me and dressed appropriately.”

Sloan was not dressed in a long gown as was the custom for females within the pack system. Like Rowan, she had on breeches, boots, and a shirt.

“Well, we can’t steal horses and run away very well dressed in a gown. I thought you’d be here earlier. Jesus,” she breathed as her eyes focused on the savage bite Alaric had inflicted.

“Don’t. We need to get Arielle and hide. It’s too close to dawn. I would have gotten away sooner, but the warlord is a man of strong appetites.”

“I’ll bet. Where can we hide? Won’t it be dangerous to come back for horses or do we borrow some from the villagers? I don’t think we can trust anyone but the three of us.”

Rowan nodded. “I agree about not trusting anyone. Hard to remember that yesterday at this time, I trusted everyone who called Calon Onest home.
